Overview

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair. During laser hair removal, a laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the tube-shaped sacs within the skin (hair follicles) that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth. It is safe, hassle of shaving
Hair color and skin type influence the success of laser hair removal. The basic principle is that the pigment of the hair, but not the pigment of the skin, should absorb the light. The laser should damage only the hair follicle while avoiding damage to the skin. Therefore, a contrast between hair and skin color — dark hair and light skin — results in the best outcomes.

The risk of damage to skin is greater when there is little contrast between hair and skin color, but advances in laser technology have made laser hair removal an option for people who have darker skin. Laser hair removal is less effective for hair colors that don’t absorb light well: gray, red, blond and white. However, laser treatment options for light-colored hair continue to be developed.

Conditions (that can be treated)

  • Laser hair removal is used to reduce unwanted hair. Common treatment locations include legs, armpits, upper lip, chin and the bikini line. However, it’s possible to treat unwanted hair in nearly any area, except the eyelid or surrounding area.

FAQs

Is there any special preparation required before treatment? Can I have a treatment as the time of consultation
Yes. If you are a candidate, the doctor may be able to perform the procedure at the time of the consultation. If the procedure cannot be performed at the time of consultation, you can schedule one very soon after.
How long does the treatment take?
Each treatment may take up to an hour, depending on the size of the area being treated. Smaller areas like the upper lip, ears, and chin can be treated in less than a minute, while large areas like the back or legs can take up to an hour or more.
Does it hurt ?
Most people just describe it as a little uncomfortable feeling comparable to mild stinging or flicking of a rubber band. It is certainly more comfortable than waxing or epilating.
What are the side effects of the procedure? Is it safe

Laser hair removal is safe, with the caveat that you shouldn’t let just anyone perform laser hair removal. There are real risks when this treatment is done by an untrained or nonmedical technician, or administered using unapproved laser machines.

The most common side effects are minor and last 1 to 3 days. These side effects include:
  • Discomfort
  • Swelling
  • Redness

Other possible side effects are rare when laser hair removal is performed by a dermatologist or under the dermatologist’s direct supervision. Other possible side effects include:

  • Blistering
  • Herpes simplex (cold sores) outbreaks
  • Infections
  • Scarring
  • Skin lightening or darkening

In time, skin color tends to return to normal. Some changes to skin color, however, are permanent. This is why seeing a medical doctor who is skilled in laser treatments and has in-depth knowledge of the skin is so important.

It is also important to follow your dermatologist’s instructions. Following both the before-treatment instructions and after-treatment instructions will greatly reduce your risk of side effects.

How many sessions are required? What is the treatment schedule
There’s no set rule on how many sessions you’ll need and when you’ll need them. Generally, people have six to eight laser hair removal treatments staggered every four to eight weeks to see results, plus an annual maintenance session.
When are the effects visible? How long the effect last?
Visible changes can be seen in 2-14 days. Hwoever multiple sessions are required to get the desired results
Is there any special care required after the procedure?
  • For a day or two afterward, the treated area of your skin may look and feel like it’s sunburned, so you might need to use cool compresses or a gentle moisturizer. If your face was treated, you can safely wear makeup the next day unless your skin feels irritated.
  • Avoid sun exposure and apply sunscreen
  • Shave to remove any hair between laser sessions, but refrain from threading, waxing, and tweezing.
  • For the first few days, avoid perfumes, deodorant (if you’ve lasered your underarms) and hot showers or saunas. Take a lukewarm shower instead.
  • It’s common to experience some swelling, itching, and redness after laser hair removal due to irritation of the hair follicles.
When can I get back to work?
Immediately after having laser hair removal, your treated skin will be red and swollen. Despite this, most people return to their everyday activities.
