Laser Hair Removal.
Overview
The risk of damage to skin is greater when there is little contrast between hair and skin color, but advances in laser technology have made laser hair removal an option for people who have darker skin. Laser hair removal is less effective for hair colors that don’t absorb light well: gray, red, blond and white. However, laser treatment options for light-colored hair continue to be developed.

FAQs
Laser hair removal is safe, with the caveat that you shouldn’t let just anyone perform laser hair removal. There are real risks when this treatment is done by an untrained or nonmedical technician, or administered using unapproved laser machines.
The most common side effects are minor and last 1 to 3 days. These side effects include:- Discomfort
- Swelling
- Redness
Other possible side effects are rare when laser hair removal is performed by a dermatologist or under the dermatologist’s direct supervision. Other possible side effects include:
- Blistering
- Herpes simplex (cold sores) outbreaks
- Infections
- Scarring
- Skin lightening or darkening
In time, skin color tends to return to normal. Some changes to skin color, however, are permanent. This is why seeing a medical doctor who is skilled in laser treatments and has in-depth knowledge of the skin is so important.
It is also important to follow your dermatologist’s instructions. Following both the before-treatment instructions and after-treatment instructions will greatly reduce your risk of side effects.
- For a day or two afterward, the treated area of your skin may look and feel like it’s sunburned, so you might need to use cool compresses or a gentle moisturizer. If your face was treated, you can safely wear makeup the next day unless your skin feels irritated.
- Avoid sun exposure and apply sunscreen
- Shave to remove any hair between laser sessions, but refrain from threading, waxing, and tweezing.
- For the first few days, avoid perfumes, deodorant (if you’ve lasered your underarms) and hot showers or saunas. Take a lukewarm shower instead.
- It’s common to experience some swelling, itching, and redness after laser hair removal due to irritation of the hair follicles.
