Overview

Pore is used to describe the small openings in the skin in which oil and sweat reach the surface from their respective glands below. The hair follicle allows the oil generated by the sebaceous glands (oil glands) to reach the surface and lubricate the skin. Typically, your pores do a great job of sweeping out oil, dead skin cells, and other gunk that may end up there. But sometimes this process goes awry. Instead of being cleared up and out of the pore, oil and dead cells become trapped in the hair follicle .Pores often appear larger with age. People often dislike the presence of open pores on their skin especially in the forehead, cheeks, and nose because such pores become more noticeable.

Cause

Factors that may lead to enlarged pores include:
  • Increased sebum production
  • Use of comedogenic products
  • Reduced elasticity around pores
  • High levels of oil (sebum) production
  • Thick hair follicles
  • Genetics or Heredity
  • Reduction of collagen production in skin, caused by aging
  • Sun damage or overexposure to the sun

Symptoms

Open pores on your cheeks, nose, and forehead can appear larger as you age, or when your pores are clogged.

Home care / DIY care

  • Cleanse your face twice a day-gently wash your face
  • Exfoliate your skin two or three times per week
  • Avoid scrubbing your face -scrubbing can irritate your skin, which can make your pores look larger.
  • A steamy facial can help clean out pores, making them appear smaller, and giving your skin a fresh glow.
  • Use non-comedogenic oil free cosmetics
  • Avoid skin creams that induce blackheads and whiteheads
  • Nourish the face using moisturizers (even for oily skin) and collagen-boosting products like retinol
  • Picking at, squeezing, or digging into your pores can also irritate your skin, making pores look more noticeable
  • Weight loss (which is reported to reduce sebum production) is recommended- Instead of chips, candy, and cookies, snack on natural, low-fat foods like fruit and vegetables.
  • Remove your makeup before sleeping- Leaving make-up on overnight clogs your pores, stretching them out over time.
